God's Care in the Midst of Affliction and Suffering
God's care for humanity in the midst of affliction and suffering is a recurring theme throughout biblical texts. Scripture indicates that suffering is common to all people [8], yet God is actively involved in the lives of those who experience distress.
The Bible presents several aspects of God's care during affliction:
- Presence and Support God is described as being with the afflicted [5], offering refuge and strength [5]. The psalmist cries out, "But I am in pain and distress. Let your salvation, God, protect me" [4]. Passages like Isaiah 43:2 and Psalm 46:5,7 affirm God's presence with those in trouble [5]. Christ is also depicted as being with and supporting the afflicted [5].
- Comfort and Compassion God comforts those who suffer [5]. Lamentations 3:32 states that even if God causes grief, "He will show compassion according to His abundant loving devotion" [3]. This comfort is attributed to God the Father, Christ, and the Holy Spirit [10]. The Holy Scriptures themselves are a source of consolation [10].
- Deliverance and Preservation God delivers and preserves the afflicted [5]. Job 36:15 highlights this, stating, "God rescues the afflicted by their affliction and opens their ears in oppression" [2]. This deliverance can occur "in" affliction by providing support, grace, and comfort, rather than always removing the affliction itself [14]. The Lord looks upon affliction with pity and compassion, arising to help and deliver [12].
- Purpose in Suffering Afflictions are not random; they are directed by God [8] and can serve a purpose for the good of individuals and the glory of God [8]. They are intended to lead people to God, prompting prayer and a deeper reliance on divine teaching and direction [6, 13, 15]. Christians are encouraged to bear afflictions with patience [8], understanding that trials are an expected part of a godly life in a sinful world [11].
- Loving-Kindness God's loving-kindness is described as great, excellent, good, marvelous, multitudinous, and everlasting [9]. This loving-kindness is a source of comfort and preservation for believers [9].
Believers are also called to respond to affliction with prayer [6] and praise [5]. Furthermore, there is a duty for believers to care for the afflicted by praying for them, sympathizing, pitying, visiting, comforting, relieving, and protecting them [7]. Paul's experience with sickness, where God had mercy on him, illustrates divine care in personal suffering [1].
