God's Goodness in the Midst of Trials and Challenges
God's goodness is a fundamental attribute of His character, which He extends to His creation according to their varying circumstances [2]. This divine goodness is not merely an abstract concept but is actively demonstrated, particularly in times of trouble and challenge. The psalmist declares, "The Lord is good, and giveth strength in the day of trouble: and knoweth them that hope in him" [1]. This goodness encompasses various aspects of God's interaction with humanity, including benevolence, mercy, pity, compassion, and long-suffering patience [2].
Scripture consistently portrays God's goodness as a source of strength and comfort for those facing adversity. Psalm 37:39 states that "the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their strength in time of trouble" [5]. Similarly, Psalm 103:6 highlights God's righteous decisions for "all who are in trouble" [4]. The concept of God's "lovingkindness" (Hebrew: hesed) is frequently used to describe this enduring goodness, which is considered "better than life" (Psalm 63:3) and "endures continually" (Psalm 52:1) [3, 6]. This lovingkindness is described as great, excellent, good, marvelous, multitudinous, and everlasting [6].
Even in the midst of profound suffering, God's righteous character provides encouragement and strength [11]. The psalmist, wounded and in misery, expresses faith in God's ability to transform weakness into abundant life [11]. This perspective is echoed in the New Testament, where believers are encouraged to endure temptation and affliction, knowing that God comforts them in all their tribulation [13, 14]. The apostle Paul, for instance, experienced God's comfort during his own trials, which enabled him to comfort others [14].
The presence of God is a key aspect of His goodness during difficult times. God is described as being "with" afflicted saints (Psalm 46:5,7; Isaiah 43:2) and serving as a refuge and strength (Psalm 27:5,6; Isaiah 25:4; Nahum 1:7) [7]. John Gill notes that Christ is "in the midst" of His people, providing support, supply, assistance, strength, protection, and defense through His gracious presence [12]. This divine presence is not only essential for comfort but also for preservation and deliverance from troubles [7].
The goodness of God is also linked to His providential care and His faithfulness to His word and promises [9]. Believers are called to wait upon God as the God of providence and salvation, trusting Him for temporal blessings, mercy, pardon, guidance, protection, and the fulfillment of His promises [9]. This waiting is described as good (Psalm 52:9) and is an act of faith [9]. God openly displays His purposed goodness to His people, even when they are afflicted [15]. The name "Mehetabel," meaning "how good is God," and "Hanniel," meaning "grace or mercy of God," reflect this understanding of divine character [8, 10]. The goodness of God, particularly His lovingkindness, is understood to be manifested through Christ [6].
