God's Mercy and Kindness Inspiring Gratitude and Worship
God's mercy and kindness are foundational aspects of His character, consistently highlighted throughout Scripture as reasons for human gratitude and worship [2, 7, 8]. These divine attributes are often presented together, emphasizing God's benevolent disposition towards His creation.
The concept of God's "lovingkindness" (Hebrew: hesed) is particularly prominent in the Psalms, where it is described as great, excellent, good, marvelous, multitudinous, and everlasting [1, 3, 4, 5]. Psalm 117:2 declares, "For his loving kindnes is great toward vs, and the trueth of the Lord endureth for euer. Praise yee the Lord" [1]. Similarly, Psalm 107:31 encourages, "Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!" [3]. This lovingkindness is not merely a passive quality but an active expression of God's character, extended through Christ [5]. It is better than life itself, and through it, saints are drawn, preserved, quickened, and comforted [5].
Mercy, closely related to lovingkindness, is another defining characteristic of God [2, 7]. God is described as a "merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth" [2]. His mercy is "rich," "manifold," "plenteous," and "abundant" [7]. It is also "sure" and "everlasting," renewed "every morning" [7]. The scope of God's mercy is vast, filling the earth and extending "over all his works" [7]. Indeed, showing mercy is depicted as God's delight [7]. The prophet Daniel acknowledges that "From God's goodness flow God's mercies; from his mercies, forgivenesses" [15]. John Gill notes that God's mercy is "tender and affectionate," freely given without human merit, and is the source of all good things, communicated through Christ [16].
The goodness of God encompasses both His benevolence and His specific actions towards His creatures [6]. As exercised in relation to suffering, it manifests as mercy, pity, and compassion [6]. Towards impenitent sinners, it is long-suffering patience, and when bestowing favor on the unworthy, it is grace [6]. This goodness is not separate from His justice but rather a different aspect of His "unchangeable, infinitely wise, and sovereign moral perfection" [6].
These divine qualities of mercy and kindness are intended to inspire a response of gratitude and worship from humanity [3, 4, 8]. David's thanksgiving prayer in 1 Chronicles 29, for example, overflows with gratitude, acknowledging God as the giver of all wealth and greatness and attributing the willingness of people to contribute to God's grace [14]. Praise is due to God for His majesty, glory, excellency, greatness, holiness, wisdom, power, goodness, and mercy [8].
Worship, in response to God's character, is not merely an outward act but must be offered "in spirit and in truth" [11]. This means that true worship occurs as God's Spirit reveals God's truth and reality to the worshiper [11]. A heart that is right with God and others, demonstrating a forgiving spirit, is essential for acceptable sacrifices and worship [9, 12]. The transforming work of God's Spirit, which is part of salvation, enables believers to have a new nature and express God's life within them [10]. This spiritual transformation leads to a life of truth and love, growing into Christ [13].
