God's Plan for the Cosmos Revealed in Scripture
The Bible presents God as the sovereign architect of the cosmos, whose plan is revealed throughout Scripture [6]. This divine plan encompasses the creation, ordering, and sustenance of the universe, and it is progressively unveiled to humanity.
From the very beginning, the biblical narrative establishes God as the sole Creator of "the heavens and the earth" [10]. Genesis 1:1-2:3 details how God brought the world into existence, ordering it from an initial state of formlessness and emptiness [10]. God "set them in the expanse of sky to give light to the earth" [2]. This act of creation is not random but purposeful, demonstrating God's wisdom and design [13]. The cosmos, including the stars, which are "infinite in number" and "established, for ever," are created by God and are subject to His will [4]. The heavens declare God's glory, and the firmament shows His handiwork [3]. God's wisdom is evident in the intricate details of creation, from the balancing of clouds in the air to the disposition of their order [7].
God's plan is not only evident in creation but also in His ongoing interaction with humanity. The Bible itself is understood as "the revelation of God to man," containing "one author and one purpose and plan" [6]. This plan often involves God making His will known through various means, including visions [8]. For instance, the prophet Daniel received visions revealing "what shall be in the latter days," indicating God's foreknowledge and control over future events [1]. Daniel blessed God for revealing such secrets [5]. Similarly, God revealed His plan of salvation in Jesus, the Messiah, to Peter, marking a significant moment in the unfolding of God's will for humanity [11].
The concept of God's plan extends to the very structure of the cosmos. Ancient Near Eastern cosmology, reflected in some biblical passages, viewed the cosmos as a three-tiered system, with the sky acting as a buffer between waters [12]. However, the biblical emphasis is on God's control over this structure. He "counts the stars" and "knows all that belongs to him," assuring His people that He attends to every detail of His creation [14]. The "host of heaven" — a term for the stars — are under His command [3, 4].
The wisdom by which the world is governed is a central aspect of God's plan. This divine wisdom is personified in Scripture, distinct from God yet integral to His being [15]. This wisdom is understood to be the "Almighty Word, Jesus Christ," who originated and maintains the order of the world [15]. This highlights a theological understanding that God's plan is not merely a series of events but is intrinsically linked to the person of Christ, who "personifies this plan" [9]. The order and maintenance of the world are attributed to this unfathomable wisdom [15].
