Grounding Examples and Illustrations in God's Character
The character of God serves as the foundational basis for numerous biblical examples and illustrations, guiding human behavior and understanding of divine principles. God's attributes, such as His goodness, mercy, and wisdom, are presented as motives for righteous living and devotion [2, 8].
For instance, devotion to God is grounded in His mercies, goodness, call, and the redemptive work of Christ [2]. This devotion should encompass one's spirit, body, members, and substance, characterized by unreserved and abounding commitment [2]. Similarly, holy boldness, a characteristic of saints, is produced by trust in God, the fear of God, and faithfulness to Him [3]. Christ Himself exemplified holy boldness [3].
God's character is also the basis for understanding His provision and judgment. The extent and variety of God's provision for humans, animals, and birds are highlighted in the creation accounts, where He made every seed-bearing plant and fruit tree for sustenance [7, 9]. God consistently demonstrates His character of generosity, compassion, and righteousness towards all creation [11, 12]. Conversely, examples of judgment, such as the angels who sinned, illustrate God's commitment to vindicate the faithful and condemn those who deny Him [10].
The Bible frequently illustrates these divine characteristics through human examples. Early rising, for instance, is exemplified by figures like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joshua, Gideon, Samuel, David, and Mary, and is linked to executing God's commands and daily duties [1]. Christ also set an example of early rising, often for devotion [1]. Resignation, or submission to God's will, is another quality exemplified by Christ and commanded in scripture, particularly in the face of suffering, loss, and even death [4].
The concept of a "foundation" itself is used metaphorically to describe God's creative power, as He laid the foundation of the earth by wisdom and established the heavens through understanding [5, 6]. Just as a building rests on its foundation, so too are moral and spiritual principles rooted in God's unchanging nature [5]. The godly are encouraged to imitate God's generosity, compassion, and righteousness [11].
