Guarding Against Spiritual Deception and Error in Christianity
Spiritual deception and error pose a constant threat to believers, necessitating vigilance and a firm grounding in Christian truth. The Apostle Paul warns against being "taken captive through philosophy and empty deception, which are based on human tradition and the spiritual forces of the world rather than on Christ" [2]. This highlights that deception often stems from sources outside of Christ's teachings.
The Bible frequently emphasizes the need to guard against deceit. The Psalmist prays, "O Lord, be the saviour of my soul from false lips, and from the tongue of deceit" [1], and "Keep me from the way of deceit" [5]. Another psalm asks for rescue "from foreigners, whose mouths speak deceit, whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood" [3]. Such prayers underscore the recognition of external forces attempting to mislead.
Christian conduct involves heedfulness in various aspects of life, including what is heard and how it is heard, and guarding against false Christs, false prophets, and false teachers [6]. Mature Christians, possessing a well-grounded knowledge of the Gospel and of Christ, are better equipped to discern and resist false teaching [7]. This maturity helps prevent believers from being "tossed and blown about" by every new doctrine [7].
Deception can also arise from within. John Gill notes that making God the author of sin or charging Him with temptation is a fundamental error that strikes at God's nature and holiness, and must be rejected [11]. The devil's primary method of spoiling souls is by beguiling them, as he "could not ruin us if he did not cheat us" [12]. Therefore, believers are exhorted to "watch" and be "upon their guard" because they are "always in danger" [8].
The antidote to sin and deception is found in Christ. The "inward anointing of God" provides safety against antichrists, enabling believers to abide in God [10]. Furthermore, putting on "all of God’s armor" provides the Lord's protection, allowing believers to stand firm against the devil's strategies [13]. Calvin suggests that maintaining a good conscience is the only way to keep the truth safe, noting that many who abandon the Gospel do so because God punishes hypocrisy with blindness [9]. Trust in God also serves as a preservative against despair, which can be a consequence of divine judgments or lead to continued sin and blasphemy [4].
