Guarding the Heart from Deception and Sinfulness
The concept of guarding the heart in biblical thought emphasizes the heart as the core of human existence, from which all actions and intentions flow [8]. This idea is encapsulated in Proverbs 4:23, which states that "issues of life are out of" the heart [7]. The biblical understanding of the heart encompasses not only spiritual activity but also all operations of human life, including wisdom, purity, uprightness, and piety [8].
The necessity of guarding the heart arises from its inherent susceptibility to deception and sinfulness. Jeremiah 17:9 declares, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?" [5]. This deceitfulness is a characteristic of the heart itself [9] and is the source from which evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies emerge [2, 10]. The unrenewed heart's imaginations are described as sinful [10]. This inherent sinfulness is understood to be present from birth, though the wicked indulge it while the godly strive against it [13].
Deception is a significant threat to the heart. Deuteronomy 11:16 warns, "Be careful, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them" [3]. Deceit is characterized as falsehood [9] and can lead individuals away from God. The first sin, for instance, involved being "beguiled—cajoled by flattering lies" [14]. Therefore, believers are exhorted to ensure their love is "without deceit" [4].
Guarding the heart involves active diligence and intentional effort. John Gill, in his commentary on Proverbs 4:23, explains that "keeping the heart with all diligence" means protecting the mind from vanity, the understanding from error, the will from perverseness, the conscience from guilt, and the affections from being inordinate or set on evil objects [15]. This diligence is crucial because the heart is naturally "so deceitful and treacherous" [15]. It requires watching all avenues to the heart to prevent harmful influences from entering and evil from emerging [15].
The New Testament further emphasizes the importance of a pure heart. Paul speaks of "keeping the secret of the faith in a heart free from sin" (1 Timothy 3:9 BBE) [1]. Believers are called to "cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God" (2 Corinthians 7:1 KJV) [6]. This cleansing involves actively hating what is evil and fixing one's mind on what is good [4]. The renewed heart is characterized by a desire to seek God, being fixed on Him, and being joyful in Him [12]. It is described as perfect with God, upright, clean, pure, tender, single, sincere, honest, good, broken, contrite, and obedient [12]. Such a heart is filled with God's law and fear, and it meditates on His word [12].
The concept of guarding the heart is closely linked to heedfulness, which is commanded throughout scripture [11]. This includes being careful in the care of the soul, in worship, in what is heard, and in conduct [11]. It also involves guarding against sin, unbelief, idolatry, and false teachers [11]. The "heart" and "soul" are sometimes used interchangeably in scripture, but the heart is specifically identified as the "home of the personal life" [8]. The protection of the heart is seen as vital, akin to a breastplate defending a vital organ, ensuring that with a "head and heart right, the whole man is right" [16].
