Human Examples of God's Character in Scripture
Scripture presents human beings as uniquely created in God's image and likeness [4, 8], a foundational claim that establishes humanity's capacity to reflect divine character. This image-bearing is not merely ontological but functional: humans are endowed with dignity and charged to rule [9], and the psalmist marvels that God made them "only a little lower than God" [9]. The implication is that human conduct can and should mirror the character of the One whose image we bear.
Christ as the Exemplar
The New Testament identifies Christ as the supreme example of divine character made visible in human form. He is described as "an example" of humility [3], compassion [1], boldness [5], devotedness to God [6], and resignation to the Father's will [7]. His humility is particularly emphasized: "Christ an example of" appears in connection with Matthew 11:29, John 13:14-15, and Philippians 2:5-8 [3]. In his earthly ministry, Christ set the pattern for compassion, weeping over Jerusalem [1], and for holy boldness in proclaiming truth [5]. The writer of Hebrews calls him "an example" of sinless holiness [2], and the Gospels record his submission to the Father's will even unto death [7].

The character of God himself is repeatedly named as the standard for human holiness: "Be holy, for I am holy" (Leviticus 19:2, 1 Peter 1:15-16) [2]. This is not an abstract ideal but a concrete call: God's character becomes the motive for righteous behavior [10], and his word displays both his character and his power [11].
Practical Imitation
The topical index of Scripture reveals how this imitation unfolds in specific virtues. Believers are to exercise compassion toward the afflicted, the poor, and even enemies, motivated by "the compassion of God" [1]. They are to exhibit humility, "a characteristic of saints," following Christ's example [3]. Devotedness to God is grounded in his mercies, goodness, and the death of Christ [6]. In each case, the divine attribute precedes and grounds the human response: we love because he first loved, we forgive because we have been forgiven, we show mercy because mercy has been shown to us.
Human examples of God's character in Scripture are thus not autonomous moral achievements but reflections—imperfect yet real—of the One in whose image humanity was made and in whose Son that image is being restored.
