Humility and Trust in God's Sovereignty Relationship
Humility in Scripture is consistently paired with trust in God's sovereignty, forming a posture that acknowledges both human limitation and divine sufficiency. Proverbs 22:4 states plainly: "By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life" [4]. This coupling is not incidental. Matthew Henry observes that religion consists largely "in humility and the fear of the Lord; that is, walking humbly with God," requiring both reverence for God's authority and "such low thoughts of ourselves as to behave humbly towards God and man" [9]. The fear of God naturally produces humility because proper regard for God counteracts delusions of self-sufficiency [10].
The biblical texts present humility as the necessary precondition for receiving God's care. Those who humble themselves are regarded by God (Psalm 138:6; Isaiah 66:2), heard by God (Psalm 9:12), and delivered by God (Job 22:29) [1].
