Identifying and Overcoming Prayer Life Weaknesses Biblically
Prayer is understood as direct address to God, an intercourse of the soul with God that can be oral or mental, occasional or constant [4]. The psalmist describes a weakening of strength and shortening of days, and knees made weak through fasting [7, 8]. This imagery suggests a physical and spiritual depletion that can hinder one's ability to pray with vigor. The Jewish church, for instance, faced the danger of extirpation during the Babylonian captivity, which weakened the nation's strength [12]. Similarly, individuals may experience their strength being weakened "in the way," a reference to the journey of life and faith [13].
Scripture offers guidance for overcoming such weaknesses. Isaiah 35:3 encourages strengthening "the weak hands and confirm the tottering knees" [2].
