The Earliest Revelation Manuscript Reads 616, not 666

Did you know the number of the beast in Revelation 13:18 is preserved as 616 in one of the earliest surviving manuscripts? Papyrus 115 (P115), discovered at Oxyrhynchus and published in 1999, reads chi-iota-stigma — 616 — instead of the traditional 666. This isn't a modern discovery. Irenaeus mentioned both readings around AD 180. And both point to the same historical figure through Hebrew gematria: Nero Caesar.

The Textual Evidence:

Most Greek manuscripts of Revelation preserve the reading 666. But:

Papyrus 115 (P115) — recovered at the ancient Egyptian city of Oxyrhynchus (Behnesa) during Grenfell and Hunt's excavations (1895-1908). Published in the Oxyrhynchus Papyri Vol. 66 in 1999. Dated to the late 3rd or early 4th century AD, making it one of the earliest surviving fragments of Revelation. It reads χις´ (chi-iota-stigma) = 616.

Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus (C, 5th c.) — also reads 616 at Revelation 13:18.

Irenaeus of Lyons (Against Heresies 5.30.1, ~AD 180) — explicitly acknowledges that "some copies" of Revelation read 616 rather than 666. He favors 666 himself, but the alternate reading was known and circulating in the earliest patristic era.

The Gematria Reveal:

Gematria is the ancient practice of assigning numerical values to letters. Revelation 13:18 explicitly signals it: "Let the one who has understanding calculate (psēphizetō) the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man." The invitation is to do the math.

Nero Caesar in Greek transliterated to Hebrew (נרון קסר): 50+200+6+50+100+60+200 = 666.

Nero Caesar in Latin (without the final n) transliterated to Hebrew (נרו קסר): same values minus one nun (50) = 616.

Both readings identify the same historical figure. The 666 version reflects the Greek spelling; the 616 version reflects the Latin. Christians in different parts of the Roman Empire copied Revelation using the spelling they knew.

Who Was Nero?

Nero (reigned AD 54-68) was the fifth Roman emperor and the first to initiate a systematic persecution of Christians. After the great fire of Rome in AD 64, he blamed Christians. According to Tacitus (Annals 15.44), Christians were arrested, tortured, crucified, and burned as human torches in Nero's gardens. Peter and Paul were both traditionally martyred in this persecution.

For the first-century Asia Minor readers of Revelation, Nero was the archetypal "beast" — Roman imperial power turned against the church.

The Reformed Reading:

Contemporary Reformed scholarship (G.K. Beale, Sam Storms, Kim Riddlebarger) generally identifies the beast with Nero and Rome — a partial-preterist / amillennial reading. G.K. Beale (The Book of Revelation, NIGTC) and Richard Bauckham (The Theology of the Book of Revelation) treat Nero as the primary referent.

Modern Misuse:

Modern American Christianity has often read 666 as a mystical future mark — tattoos, barcodes, credit chips. This misses what the text is doing. Revelation was written for a specific first-century audience facing a specific imperial persecution. The number was solvable then.

The 616 reading in P115 doesn't threaten Scripture — it clarifies it. Both variants confirm the same target: Nero Caesar.

Six six six. Six one six.

Different math. Same target.
