Jesus' Second Coming in the 21st Century
As we ponder the question of Jesus' return, we're reminded that our Lord's ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). While Scripture provides us with signs and indicators of the end times, it's essential to approach this topic with humility, recognizing that the exact timing of Jesus' return is known only to the Father (Matthew 24:36). We're exhorted to be prepared, to be watchful, and to live with a sense of anticipation, for we know that our Lord's return is imminent (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, Titus 2:13).
As we consider the prospect of Jesus returning this century, we must acknowledge that the Bible teaches us to be mindful of the seasons, but not to set dates (Matthew 24:32-35, Mark 13:28-31). The apostle Paul reminds us that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night, unexpected and unannounced (1 Thessalonians 5:2-3). Our focus, therefore, should not be on speculating about the timing of Jesus' return, but on living in the light of His coming, with hearts that are pure, lives that are holy, and spirits that are watchful (1 John 3:2-3, 2 Peter 3:11-14).
In the midst of uncertainty, we find comfort in the promises of Scripture, which assure us that our Lord will return in power and glory, to redeem His people and to establish His eternal kingdom (Revelation 20:1-6, 1 Corinthians 15:50-57). As we await His return, may we be motivated to live with intentionality, to share the gospel with those around us, and to trust in the sovereign goodness of our God, who is working all things together for our good and for His glory (Romans 8:28-30). May our hearts be filled with hope, our spirits be lifted with joy, and our lives be transformed by the prospect of Jesus' return, as we look to the future with faith, trust, and anticipation.
