John 1:14 and the Definition of Truth in Scripture
John 1:14 states, "And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth" (ASV) [2]. This verse is central to understanding the incarnation of Jesus Christ, whom the Apostle John identifies as "the Word" [6]. The passage describes the Word, who was "in the beginning" and "was with God, and was God," taking on human form [6].
The concept of "truth" in Scripture carries various meanings. It can denote that which is opposed to falsehood, as seen in Proverbs 12:17, 19. It also signifies fidelity or truthfulness, as in Isaiah 59:14-15 and Jeremiah 7:28 [1]. The Word of God, or the Scriptures, is also called "the word of truth" (James 1:18) and "the scripture of truth" (Daniel 10:21) [3, 4]. Christian love, according to John, is rooted in knowing this truth, which is more than just facts; it is the presence of God [9].
