Judgment of Believers Despite Forgiveness and Salvation
As we ponder the mystery of God's judgment and our salvation, we must first anchor ourselves in the bedrock of Scripture, where we find that our justification is a gift of God's grace, received through faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). And yet, the Bible also teaches that we will all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, where our works will be evaluated (2 Corinthians 5:10). This may seem paradoxical, but it's essential to understand that God's judgment is not about determining our salvation, for that has already been secured by the finished work of Christ (John 19:30). Rather, God's judgment is about revealing the true nature of our hearts and the quality of our lives as believers.
In 1 Corinthians 3:12-15, the apostle Paul writes about the judgment of believers, using the metaphor of a building inspection, where our works will be tested by fire. This judgment is not about condemnation, for as Romans 8:1 reminds us, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Instead, it's about the refinement and rewarding of our service to God. The Lord is concerned with the motivations, intentions, and consequences of our actions, and He will evaluate them in accordance with His perfect justice and righteousness (Psalm 119:137). This judgment should not fill us with fear, but rather with a sense of accountability and a desire to live lives that are pleasing to God (2 Corinthians 5:9).
As we live in the light of God's judgment, we are called to walk in humility, recognizing that our salvation is a gift, and our service is a response to that gift (1 Peter 5:6-7). We are to strive for holiness, not to earn our salvation, but because we are already saved and are being conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29). In this way, God's judgment becomes a catalyst for our sanctification, as we seek to honor Him with our lives, and to hear those wonderful words, "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:23).
