Living by the Holy Spirit's Enablement Daily
Living by the Holy Spirit's enablement daily involves a continuous reliance on God's Spirit for guidance, strength, and the production of spiritual fruit. The Holy Spirit is understood as the divine Advocate who counsels and protects believers [7]. This daily enablement is crucial because sin has a deceptive and hardening power that can lead to unbelief and apostasy if not actively resisted [1, 13, 15].
The Bible emphasizes the importance of mutual exhortation among believers "day by day" to guard against the deceitfulness of sin [1, 13]. This exhortation can take many forms, such as discussing divine matters, praying together, and reminding one another of God's promises [15].
The Holy Spirit's work in believers is multifaceted. He provides access to God, an access that is also by Christ and obtained through faith [4]. The Spirit is depicted through various emblems, such as water, symbolizing cleansing, fertilization, refreshment, and abundance; fire, representing purification, illumination, and searching; wind, indicating independence, power, and reviving effects; and oil, signifying healing and anointing for tasks [6, 14].
A key aspect of living by the Spirit is the production of "fruit of the Spirit," which contrasts with the "works of the flesh" [8]. This fruit is described as a harmonious whole of righteous works, including goodness, righteousness, and truth [9, 11, 12]. John Calvin noted that believers are like "wild and useless olive trees" until they are grafted into Christ, who, through His "living root," enables them to become fruit-bearing branches [11]. This fruit is the result of conduct and leads to repletion [10].
While miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit were evident in the early church, communicated through the preaching of the gospel and the laying on of apostles' hands, and served to confirm the gospel and edify the Church, the Spirit's daily enablement extends beyond these specific gifts [2, 5]. The Spirit dispenses these gifts according to His sovereign will [5]. The sealing of the Holy Spirit, which believers receive, is a promise "to the day of redemption" [3].
