Love for God as Motivation in Christian Living
Love for God serves as a foundational motivation in Christian living, encompassing both the love God has for humanity and the love believers are commanded to return to God [1, 4]. This reciprocal love is central to Christian conduct and character [2].
The Bible commands believers to love God with all their heart, soul, and mind, identifying it as the first and greatest commandment [3; Matthew 22:37-38]. This love is not merely an emotion but an active principle that shapes one's life [3]. It is produced in believers by the Holy Spirit and is a response to God's prior love for humanity [3; Galatians 5:22; 1 John 4:19]. God's love is described as sovereign, great, abiding, unfailing, and everlasting, manifested towards perishing sinners and His saints alike [12; John 3:16; Ephesians 2:4].
Love for God is intrinsically linked to obedience.
