Moses in the Cleft of the Rock Passage
Exodus 33:22 records God's promise to Moses: "and it hath come to pass, in the passing by of Mine honour, that I have set thee in a cleft of the rock, and spread out My hands over thee, until My passing by" [1]. This episode occurs after the golden calf incident, when Moses requests to see God's glory. The Lord grants a partial revelation, shielding Moses in a rock cleft while His glory passes, allowing Moses to see only His "back" but not His face.
The Setting and Divine Accommodation
The cleft is located on Mount Sinai (also called Horeb), where Moses ascends to receive renewed covenant tablets. Abraham Ibn Ezra identifies "the rock" as referring to the mountain's summit, noting that God Himself would place Moses in the cleft—Scripture does not instruct Moses to position himself there [3]. This divine action underscores God's protective initiative. The passage illustrates a principle of divine accommodation: God reveals Himself in ways finite creatures can endure, concealing what would otherwise overwhelm human capacity.
Rabbinic Interpretation
Jewish tradition emphasizes the intensity of the divine presence and the necessity of complete concealment. The Babylonian Talmud records Rabbi Yoḥanan's teaching that had even a needle-sized crack remained in the cave where Moses (and later Elijah at the same location) stood, they could not have endured the light, "for no man shall see Me and live" [6, 7, 8]. This tradition identifies the cleft of Exodus 33:22 with the cave Elijah enters in 1 Kings 19:9, creating a typological link between the two prophets' encounters with God's passing glory [4]. The Midrash also applies the imagery metaphorically, interpreting "clefts of the rock" in Song of Songs 2:14 as referring to Israel's protected status before God [9].
Christian Interpretation
Christian commentators have connected this cleft with the rock Moses struck at Horeb to provide water for Israel (Exodus 17:6) [2, 5]. John Gill notes that tradition identifies a visible chasm on Mount Sinai's summit, called by Arabs "Gibel el Mousa" (the mountain of Moses), as the very cave where Moses hid [5]. The rock imagery carries typological weight in Christian theology, where Christ is identified as the spiritual rock (1 Corinthians 10:4), though this specific passage focuses on the historical theophany rather than christological prefigurement.
The episode remains a defining moment in biblical theology of divine transcendence and the limits of human vision of God.
