Jesus Said God Notices Every Bird That Dies

Episode 4 of the November series: Providence & Gratitude. We've seen God's hand over the dark days, the "random" ones, and the evil done to us. Today He reaches all the way down: to the death of a sparrow and the number of hairs on your head.

Matthew 10:29-31 (KJV):

"Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows."

The sparrow was the cheapest thing in the market.

A "farthing" renders the Roman assarion, a small coin worth roughly a sixteenth of a day's wage. Two sparrows went for one of them — Luke's parallel says five sparrows for two farthings (Luke 12:6), so buy in bulk and you basically got one free. The sparrow was the least valuable meat sold, the throwaway bird.

And Jesus says not even one of them falls to the ground "without your Father."

"Without your Father" is a bigger claim than it sounds.

The Greek has no noun after it — literally, the sparrow falls "not apart from your Father." Not "without your Father's knowledge" (a smaller claim), but without your Father, period: not apart from His governing hand. Luke 12:6 sharpens it: "not one of them is forgotten before God." The death of the cheapest creature on earth is under the care and governance of Almighty God.

Then Jesus turns it on you: the hairs are NUMBERED.

Matthew 10:30: "the very hairs of your head are all numbered." The word is a perfect passive — counted, and kept counted. Not a rough sense of how much hair you have. An exact, maintained count. This is a biblical idiom for total care and protection (1 Samuel 14:45; 2 Samuel 14:11; Acts 27:34 — "there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you").

Don't miss WHY Jesus says all this.

This isn't an abstract lecture on providence. Matthew 10 is Jesus commissioning the twelve and sending them into persecution — floggings, courts, betrayal, death (Matthew 10:16-28). Three times He says "fear not" (vv. 26, 28, 31). The sparrow and the hair count are the GROUND of that courage.

The logic is from the lesser to the greater: if the Father governs the fall of a worthless sparrow and keeps an exact count of your hair, then nothing can touch you outside His hand — and "ye are of more value than many sparrows." The disciple can face the sword without terror (compare Luke 21:18: "there shall not an hair of your head perish").

The comfort for the one who feels invisible.

Maybe you feel small. Overlooked. Too insignificant to matter to the God who runs galaxies. The answer of this passage is not "you're actually important by the world's measures." It's better than that: the God who governs the universe sees YOU, counts YOU, and holds YOU.

You are small, and you are seen. Those are not in tension. The hand that catches the sparrow is holding you.

And this is the ground of gratitude.

A God this attentive to the smallest detail is a God to thank for the smallest mercies. Minute providence turns the ordinary — the meal, the breath, the unremarkable safe day — into gifts with a Giver. Ingratitude overlooks the small; faith sees the Father's hand in it. (That's where this series heads next week.)
