Overcoming Common Obstacles to Obedience to Christ

As we strive to follow Christ, we often encounter obstacles that hinder our obedience to Him. One of the most significant hurdles is the flesh, with its innate tendency towards sin and rebellion, as Paul so eloquently describes in Romans 7:14-25. The old self, with its desires and patterns, can be a formidable foe, seeking to undermine our commitment to Christ and His ways. Furthermore, the world around us, with its values and temptations, can also pose a significant challenge, as 1 John 2:15-17 warns us against loving the world and its fleeting allurements. The enemy of our souls, Satan, is also at work, seeking to deceive and distract us from our devotion to Christ, as seen in his cunning tactics in Genesis 3 and Matthew 4.

Despite these obstacles, we are not left to our own devices. In Christ, we have been given the power to overcome them, as Paul declares in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." The key to overcoming these hurdles lies in cultivating a deep and abiding relationship with Christ, rooted in the Word of God and nurtured through prayer and fellowship with other believers. As we immerse ourselves in Scripture, we are reminded of God's sovereignty and goodness, and our hearts are transformed by the renewing of our minds, as Romans 12:2 encourages. The Holy Spirit, who dwells within us, empowers us to put to death the deeds of the flesh and to walk in the Spirit, as Galatians 5:16-25 teaches.

As we seek to overcome the obstacles that hinder our obedience, we must also remember that our obedience is not a solo endeavor, but rather a communal one. We are part of a larger body, the church, where we can find support, encouragement, and accountability, as Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us. By fixing our eyes on Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith, as Hebrews 12:2 encourages, and by relying on the power of the Holy Spirit, we can overcome even the most daunting obstacles and live a life of joyful obedience to our Lord and Savior.
