Overcoming Verbal Abuse with Faith and Spiritual Strength
Verbal abuse, characterized by malicious speech, is forbidden in Christian teaching, which identifies it as springing from an evil heart [7]. Scripture encourages believers to overcome such challenges through faith and spiritual strength.
A foundational aspect of spiritual strength is trust in God. Deuteronomy 31:6 exhorts believers to "Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you" [2]. This trust in God is a preservative against despair, which saints are sometimes tempted to experience but are enabled to overcome [10]. Hope, which is described as lively, sure, steadfast, and gladdening, is found in God, in Christ, in God's promises, and in His mercy [9]. This hope is a work of the Holy Spirit and is obtained through grace, the Word, patience, comfort of the Scriptures, and faith [9].
Faith itself is a key component. Jamieson, Fausset & Brown describe "the work of faith" as its active reality, demonstrating alacrity in receiving truth and producing fruits, rather than being a passive assent [11]. This active faith gives strength to prayer, which is a significant instrument against spiritual adversaries [12]. Believers are encouraged to pray under affliction, asking God to consider their trouble, for His presence and support, for divine comfort, and for deliverance [8]. James 5:16 further instructs believers to "Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective" [3].
Another aspect of spiritual strength is holy boldness, which is exemplified by Christ and is a characteristic of saints [6]. This boldness comes through faith in Christ, trust in God, the fear of God, and faithfulness to God [6]. Believers are exhorted to express their trust in God with boldness and to pray for it [6].
The Bible also emphasizes the importance of receiving the implanted word with humility, which is "able to save your souls" [4]. This suggests that internalizing God's word provides a defense against external negativity.
