This declaration functions as an oath, appealing to Christ as the omniscient God to attest to the veracity of his statements regarding his ministry [10]. The preaching of the gospel itself should be characterized by sincerity, standing in opposition to "fleshly wisdom" [1].
Integrity in teaching is explicitly commanded in Titus 2:7, which instructs ministers to be "an example of good works; in your teaching showing integrity, seriousness, incorruptibility" [3]. This means that the minister's life and doctrine must align, demonstrating a consistent witness. John Gill, a Baptist commentator, notes that ministers should take heed to their lives and conversations, ensuring they are exemplary, and also to their doctrine, that it aligns with Scripture [12].
Beyond sincerity, ministers are to exhibit faithfulness and steadfastness. Faithfulness is a characteristic of saints generally, but it is particularly manifested in the service of God and in declaring His word [6]. This involves speaking "the whole" word of God, without adding or subtracting from it, and doing so with courage [11]. Steadfastness is commanded for all believers, but it is especially crucial for those in ministry, enabling them to cleave to God and persevere in His work [8]. Watchfulness is another key aspect of conviction in ministry. Christ Himself is presented as an example of watchfulness, and ministers are specifically exhorted to exercise it [4]. This watchfulness should be accompanied by prayer, thanksgiving, steadfastness in faith, heedfulness, and sobriety [4]. Sobriety, which involves self-control and clear-headedness, is required in ministers, their spouses, and all saints [9].
