Protecting Against Negative Energies with Scripture Defense
Scripture presents God as the ultimate source of protection against various forms of adversity, including spiritual and physical threats. This divine protection is often depicted through metaphors such as a fortress or a shield [1, 9, 16]. Believers are encouraged to rely on God's strength and to seek His defense against enemies [4, 15].
The concept of divine protection extends to safeguarding individuals from the schemes of the devil and other negative influences. Ephesians 6:11 exhorts believers to "Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil" [2]. This armor is understood as God's protection, enabling believers to resist evil attacks and remain steadfast [8, 10]. The Apostle John similarly notes that those who abide in God are safe from the evil one [11, 13]. God's word itself is also presented as a defense against the world [14].
Biblical texts emphasize that God's protection is indispensable, unfailing, and perpetual [6]. It is afforded to those who heed God's commands, to returning sinners, and to the poor [6]. The Psalms frequently express reliance on God for deliverance from wicked and violent individuals [3, 12]. For instance, Psalm 140:4 prays, "Yahweh, keep me from the hands of the wicked. Preserve me from the violent men who have determined to trip my feet" [3]. While God defends against enemies, scripture also instructs believers to love their enemies, pray for them, and assist them, rather than rejoicing in their misfortunes [5].
Rebellion against God, however, is presented as provoking Him and vexing the Holy Spirit [7]. This includes unbelief, rejecting God's governance, despising His law, and murmuring against Him [7]. Despite human failings, God's protection is described as encouraging and effectual, ensuring that those under His care cannot be snatched away [6].
