Purity of Heart in Gospel Service and Ministry
Purity of heart is a foundational concept for those engaged in gospel service and ministry, emphasizing an inner state of sincerity and devotion to God. The heart is considered the wellspring of life's issues, and God is depicted as one who tries, knows, searches, and understands its thoughts [3]. Therefore, the heart should be prepared for God, given to God, and made perfect with God [3].
Ministers of the gospel are called to exemplify sincerity [1]. The concept of "pure in heart" does not imply an absolute freedom from sin in this life, which is only true of Christ, angels, and glorified saints [8]. Rather, it refers to a heart where God's grace resides, where there is genuine love for God, Christ, and holy things, and where faith in Christ and hope of eternal life are purifying [10]. The Holy Spirit is understood as the purifier, bestowing the obedience of faith [5]. Such individuals are "full of the Holy Ghost," meaning the Spirit of holiness dwells within them, filling their hearts, enlightening their understanding, guiding their judgment, and establishing their will in righteousness [6].
- Content and Manner of Preaching: The subject matter of gospel ministry respects the holiness of God, with doctrines that are pure and promote holiness of heart and life [4]. Ministers are to "preach the word"—either Christ himself or the word of truth and faith—openly, publicly, and with courage, without adding to or subtracting from it [9].
- Service and Humility: Ministry involves "priestly service of the gospel of God," aiming for Gentiles to become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit [2].
