Purpose and Design of Human Creation Explained
The creation of humanity, as described in the biblical account, is presented as a deliberate act of God, distinct from the creation of other living things, and imbued with specific purposes and design [1, 2]. The book of Genesis states that God created humankind "in his image, in the likeness of God he created him, male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27 LEB) [2]. This "image of God" (imago Dei) is a foundational concept for understanding human purpose.
The creation of humanity was part of a larger creative act by God, which brought all things into existence from nothing [4]. This act is attributed to the entire Godhead: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit [1, 3, 4]. For instance, John 1:3 states that "All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made," referring to Christ [1]. Similarly, the Holy Spirit is mentioned in Job 33:4 as the source of life [1]. The creation account in Genesis 1:26 even suggests a Trinitarian consultation: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness" [1].
Humanity was created on the sixth day of creation, after the formation of the heavens, earth, light, firmament, dry land, vegetation, and celestial bodies [1, 3]. God declared all of his creation "good" seven times, but after the creation of human beings, he declared it "very good" [7]. This suggests a particular significance for humanity within the created order.
The "image of God" in which humanity was created is understood in various ways. Some interpretations suggest it includes the physical form and erect stature of humans, which sets them apart from other creatures, and aligns with the pre-ordained form of the Son of God [8]. More commonly, it is understood to encompass the immortality of the soul, intellectual capacities, and the original state of purity, holiness, and righteousness in which humanity was created [8]. This image also implies a dominion, power, and authority given to humanity over other creatures, making humans God's vice-regents on earth [1, 8]. Adam, for example, was given the task of naming the animals, signifying his authority [1, 6].
The purpose of human creation is intrinsically linked to God's pleasure and glory [3]. Revelation 4:11 states, "You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created" [1]. Proverbs 16:4 also notes that "The Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble" [1]. Thus, humanity, like all creation, exists for God's purposes and to bring Him praise and glory [5, 6].
While humanity cannot "profit" God in the sense of adding to His being (Job 22:2), humans are called to reflect God's character and rule over creation responsibly [1]. This design implies a relationship between the Creator and the created, where humanity is meant to live in accordance with God's will and to worship Him [1]. The creation account emphasizes God's absolute freedom and wisdom in this creative act, with the cause of all things residing solely in His will [4].
