Pursuing Holiness in Daily Life and Spiritual Practices

As believers, we are called to pursue holiness, for it is written, "Without holiness no one will see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14). This pursuit is a lifelong journey, one that requires intentional effort and dependence on the Holy Spirit. To begin, we must prioritize the study of God's Word, for it is through Scripture that we come to know God's will and are transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). As we read and meditate on the Bible, we must also pray, asking God to illuminate our understanding and to conform us to the image of Christ (Psalm 119:18, Romans 8:29).

In addition to these spiritual disciplines, we must also seek to put off the old self and put on the new, as Paul instructs in Ephesians 4:22-24. This involves recognizing and repenting of sin, and then replacing sinful patterns with righteous ones. For example, if we struggle with anger, we must learn to respond to situations with patience and kindness, as Colossians 3:8-10 teaches. We must also surround ourselves with a community of believers who will encourage and support us in our pursuit of holiness, as Hebrews 10:24-25 exhorts. In this community, we can find accountability, wisdom, and the opportunity to serve and love one another, as Galatians 5:13 instructs.

As we pursue holiness, we must remember that it is not a journey of self-effort, but rather one of dependence on God's grace. We are not sufficient in ourselves to achieve holiness, but rather, it is God who works in us to will and to act according to his good purpose (Philippians 2:13). Therefore, we must continually look to Christ, who is our holiness (1 Corinthians 1:30), and trust in his power to transform us. By doing so, we will be able to say with Paul, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me" (Galatians 2:20), and we will be conformed to his image, becoming more holy with each passing day.
