Realistic Expectations in Christian Testimonies and Witnessing
Christian testimonies and witnessing involve sharing one's faith and experiences, often with an expectation of certain outcomes. However, biblical teachings suggest that realistic expectations should be rooted in perseverance, the witness of the Holy Spirit, and an understanding of human sinfulness.
Patience is a recurring theme in Christian life, enjoined upon believers and exemplified by Christ himself [1]. The trials faced by saints are understood to lead to patience, which in turn produces "proof" or "experience" of faith [1, 12]. This experience then fosters hope [1, 12]. The prophet Habakkuk, for instance, is depicted as waiting earnestly and patiently for divine revelation [11]. This suggests that immediate or easily discernible results are not always guaranteed in spiritual endeavors, including witnessing. Perseverance is also seen as an evidence of reconciliation with God and belonging to Christ, maintained through divine power and Christ's intercession [4].
The act of witnessing itself is an opportunity to bear testimony [10]. The Holy Spirit bears witness to Christ as Messiah, as redeemer, and as one who perfects saints [3]. This divine witness confirms the preaching of the gospel and accompanies the faithful proclamation of the apostles [3]. This implies that the effectiveness of witnessing ultimately relies on the Spirit's work, not solely on the speaker's efforts or the immediate receptiveness of the audience.
Realistic expectations also account for the pervasive reality of sin. All human beings are born sinners, and while the godly strive against their sinful nature, the wicked indulge it [5]. Sin is described as a love of self, dishonor to God, and disobedience [6]. Paul emphasizes universal sinfulness, stating that both Gentiles and Jews are under sin's power and cannot find favor with God through their own actions [8]. Deliberate sins are often committed with an arrogant or insolent attitude, representing rebellion against God [7]. Even after conversion, believers may still commit actual sins [9]. This understanding of human nature suggests that resistance to the gospel or a lack of immediate transformation in those being witnessed to is not unexpected. The expectation, as expressed by Paul in Philippians, is that Christ will be magnified, whether by life or by death, with boldness and without shame [2]. This focus is on the glorification of Christ rather than on specific, immediate results from witnessing.
