Reasons for Faith and Trust in God's Existence
As we ponder the question of why we should believe, we are reminded that faith is not merely a product of human reason or emotion, but a gift from God Himself, as Ephesians 2:8-9 so beautifully expresses. The apostle Paul writes that "by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." This gift of faith is rooted in the character of God, who is faithful and true, as the psalmist declares, "The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth" (Psalm 145:18).
Our confidence in believing is also grounded in the historical events of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which demonstrate God's love and faithfulness to His people. As the apostle Peter writes, "we were eyewitnesses of his majesty" (2 Peter 1:16), and the resurrection of Jesus is the ultimate proof of God's power and our salvation, as Paul argues in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures."
Furthermore, our belief is not simply a matter of intellectual assent, but a heart response to the beauty and majesty of God's character, as revealed in Scripture. As we read in Isaiah 40:28, "the Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth," and in Psalm 19:1, "the heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork." The more we behold God's glory, the more our hearts are drawn to worship and trust Him. Ultimately, we believe because God has spoken, and His Word is trustworthy, as the psalmist affirms, "the words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times" (Psalm 12:6).
