Recognizing and Responding to God's Providence and Protection
God's providence refers to His ongoing care and governance over all creation, ensuring that His purposes are fulfilled [1, 2]. This concept is rooted in the understanding that God actively preserves and directs everything through various means, often referred to as "second causes" [1].
The scope of divine providence is comprehensive, extending to the natural world, including plants and animals (Psalm 104:14, 21-29; Matthew 6:26) [1]. It also encompasses the affairs of humanity, from nations and rulers to the lives of individuals (1 Chronicles 16:31; Proverbs 21:1; Luke 1:53) [1]. Even the free actions of people are understood to fall within God's providential oversight (Exodus 12:36; Psalm 33:14-15) [1].
Recognizing God's providence involves acknowledging His continuous care and provision [2]. This includes His preservation of creatures (Nehemiah 9:6; Matthew 10:29), His provision for their needs (Psalm 104:27-28; Matthew 6:26), and His special preservation, prosperity, and protection of His people (Psalm 37:28; 91:11; Matthew 10:30) [2]. The psalmist, for instance, experiences God's rescue and provision of victory, understanding that God's character has integrity and that seeking His protection entails trust and faith [8].
Responding to God's providence and protection involves several key actions:
- Waiting upon God: This includes waiting on God as the God of providence, salvation, and the giver of all temporal blessings, as well as waiting for His mercy, pardon, guidance, and the fulfillment of His promises [3].
- Prayer: Prayer is commanded (Isaiah 55:6; Matthew 7:7) and is to be offered to God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit, through Christ [4]. God is depicted as hearing and answering prayers [4].
- Prudence and Wisdom: Prudence, often connected with wisdom, involves understanding God's ways and one's own, foreseeing and avoiding evil, and being preserved by it (Proverbs 2:11; 14:8, 15) [5]. John Gill notes that understanding the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom, is influenced by the riches of God's special grace and goodness [6].
- Active Trust: While trusting in God's protection, individuals are still called to use the means of self-preservation and defense that God has provided [7]. As Adam Clarke explains regarding Nehemiah, "The strongest confidence in the protection and favor of God does not preclude the use of all or any of the means of self-preservation and defense which his providence has put in our power" [7].
