Regeneration by the Holy Spirit: Assurance and Evidence

As we ponder the profound question of knowing whether we have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, we are reminded of the apostle Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come." This glorious truth underscores the transformative work of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer. Regeneration, as our Lord Jesus Christ taught in John 3:3, is a birth from above, a spiritual rebirth that enables us to see and enter the kingdom of God. But how can we be assured of this new birth?

The Scripture provides us with several indicators of regeneration. In 1 John 2:3, the apostle John writes, "We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands." Obedience to God's commands is not the cause of regeneration, but rather its effect. A regenerated heart, as Ezekiel 36:26-27 promises, is given a new spirit and a heart of flesh, enabling us to walk in God's statutes and keep His judgments. Furthermore, a genuine work of the Holy Spirit will produce fruits of repentance, as our Lord taught in Luke 3:8, and a deep-seated love for God and His people, as expressed in 1 John 4:7-8. The regenerate person will also exhibit a growing desire to feed on the Word of God, as Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, and to worship Him in spirit and truth, as we read in John 4:24.

While these indicators are not exhaustive, they provide a foundation for self-examination and reflection. Ultimately, the assurance of regeneration is not based on our feelings or experiences, but on the objective promises of God's Word. As Romans 8:16 assures us, "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children." If you are questioning your spiritual state, I encourage you to cry out to God, as the psalmist did in Psalm 139:23-24, "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." May the Holy Spirit guide you into all truth, and may you find comfort and assurance in the unshakeable promises of God's Word.
