Satan's Ability to Inspire Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit
This truth addresses the age-old concern of the believer's struggle with blasphemous thoughts, particularly in relation to the Holy Spirit. Paul writes in Romans 8:28 that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, but this does not mean believers are immune to the temptations of the devil. Satan can indeed put thoughts into the minds of believers, as seen in the example of Jesus' own temptation in the wilderness.
When reading Matthew 12:31-32, which warns against blaspheming the Holy Spirit, a believer may experience a surge of fear or anxiety, and it is in these moments that Satan may seek to plant seeds of doubt or blasphemous thoughts. However, it is crucial to remember that such thoughts are not a reflection of the believer's true heart, but rather a manifestation of the spiritual battle that rages within.
The gospel connection here is that, despite these temptations, believers are secure in Christ and are called to trust in His power to overcome them. As the Westminster Confession reminds us, the believer's assurance of salvation is rooted in the work of the Holy Spirit, who testifies to our adoption as children of God. In the face of such temptations, the believer must cling to the promises of Scripture and seek refuge in the sovereignty of God, who is able to keep them from falling.
