Scriptural Examples of God's Character and Work in Lives
The Bible presents numerous examples of God's character and work, often highlighting His active involvement in the lives of individuals and in the broader scope of history. The psalmist invites observers to "Come, and see God’s deeds—awesome work on behalf of the children of men" [6]. These deeds reveal God's power and character [11].
God's work is evident in creation, where His power and wisdom are displayed [10]. Beyond creation, His providence is seen in daily events, particularly in how He acts on behalf of His people [10]. The miracles performed by Christ during His earthly ministry are also cited as divine works, demonstrating His deity and role as the Messiah [12]. These include His preaching, His perfect obedience to the law, and His work of redemption and salvation [12].
God's character is also revealed through the qualities He desires and enables in believers. For instance, humility is necessary for serving God, and Christ Himself serves as the ultimate example of this trait [4]. Those who are humble are regarded, heard, delivered, and exalted by God [4]. Similarly, Christ exemplified devotion to God, diligence, and sincerity [2, 3, 5]. Believers are called to exhibit devotedness to God, grounded in His mercies, goodness, call, and Christ's death [2]. This devotion should be unreserved and permeate all aspects of life, including one's spirit, body, members, and substance [2]. Diligence is required in seeking God, obeying Him, hearkening to Him, striving for perfection, cultivating Christian graces, and guarding against defilement [3]. Sincerity should characterize love for God and Christ, service to God, faith, love for one another, and overall conduct [5].
The Scriptures are designed to guide believers toward good works [1]. These "good works" are not a means to justification but are the fruit of righteousness, wrought by God within individuals, and performed in Christ's name to the glory of God [1]. They are evidence of a true knowledge of God and characterize genuine Christian commitment [8, 9]. As Ephesians 2:10 states, "we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life" [7]. God's gift of grace has been made evident in history through Christ Jesus, and its effects are mediated through the proclamation of the Gospel [13].
