Scripture consistently portrays suffering and trial as occasions to approach God for mercy rather than to withdraw in despair. This confidence rests not on human merit but on Christ's completed work, which opens access to divine compassion precisely when circumstances press hardest.
The Biblical Pattern of Crying Out
The Psalms model this posture repeatedly. David's plea, "Have mercy on me, Yahweh, for I am in distress. My eye, my soul, and my body waste away with grief" [5], demonstrates that honest lament belongs within faithful prayer. The afflicted are exhorted to seek God "for mercy" and "for pardon" [3], recognizing that temporal suffering often exposes deeper spiritual need. Prayer under affliction should include requests "that God would consider our trouble," "for divine comfort," and "for deliverance" [7], acknowledging both immediate distress and the soul's dependence on God's sustaining presence.
Suffering as Expected and Purposeful
The New Testament frames persecution and trial as normative for godly living. Paul reminds Timothy that "all that live godly in Christ, shall suffer" [2], while Peter instructs believers not to "be surprised" when facing hostility, since those "seeking to lead godly lives, can expect to face the hostility of a sinful world" [10]. God's Character in Response
