Seeking God's Wisdom and Guidance in Daily Life
Seeking God's wisdom and guidance in daily life is a recurring theme in biblical literature, often presented as a diligent and intentional pursuit. The book of Ecclesiastes, for instance, describes the heart's quest "to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things" [1]. This search is not merely intellectual but involves a deep engagement of one's inner being, as the author of Ecclesiastes also notes, "I searched in my heart how to cheer my flesh with wine, my heart yet guiding me with wisdom" [4]. The Geneva Bible translation of Ecclesiastes 7:27 similarly speaks of encompassing "about, both I and mine heart to knowe and to enquire and to search wisedome, and reason" [2].
The pursuit of wisdom is intrinsically linked to seeking God Himself. Torrey's Topical Textbook indicates that "seeking God" is commanded in scripture, encompassing the search for His name, His word, His face, His strength, and His commandments [5]. This pursuit requires diligence, as seen in the exhortation to "seek unto God betimes—early. Make it the first and chief anxiety" [7]. The prophet Isaiah's message emphasizes the importance of fearing the Lord over fearing people, noting that for those who fear the Lord, "he becomes a sanctuary; their salvation is assured" [8]. This "healthy fear for the Lord counteracts inner turmoil and brings inner peace" [10]. The quest for true wisdom, according to Proverbs, is impossible without the fear of the Lord [12].
The Bible also emphasizes the role of self-examination and prayer in this process. The Psalmist prays, "Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts" [3]. This reflects a desire for divine scrutiny and guidance. John Gill, in his commentary on Lamentations, suggests that instead of complaining, individuals should "search and try our ways" to find support and comfort in God's love and covenant [11]. Prayer is presented as a means to seek divine teaching and direction, especially during affliction [6]. The ultimate purpose of God's arrangements of power, wisdom, and love is "that they should seek the Lord," even if it means "groping their way in the dark" to find Him [9]. This journey of seeking God is not about His distance from humanity, but humanity's distance from Him due to sin [9].
