Spiritual Discernment and the Human Heart in Scripture
In biblical understanding, the "heart" is not merely an organ but the central core of human existence, encompassing spiritual activity, emotions, thoughts, and will [1, 13]. It is considered the "home of the personal life," from which a person's character—whether wise, pure, upright, or pious—is derived [1]. The heart is so fundamental that the "issues of life are out of" it, as Proverbs 4:23 states [2]. This verse emphasizes the importance of guarding one's heart above all else, because it is the wellspring of life [13].
Spiritual discernment, therefore, deeply involves the heart. God is depicted as the one who tries, knows, and searches the heart, understanding its thoughts and secrets [2, 4, 8, 12]. Jeremiah 17:10 states, "I the Lord search the heart," indicating that God perceives all its intentions, designs, and hidden wickedness, even when the heart is deceitful [8]. Similarly, Psalm 139:23 implores God to "Search me, God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts" [3]. This divine scrutiny extends to the mind and heart of every individual [12].
The human heart, however, is often depicted as prone to corruption and deceit [8]. Spiritual death is characterized by alienation from God and carnal-mindedness, which stems from the heart's natural state [5]. This inherent corruption necessitates a spiritual transformation, often referred to as the "new birth" or a "new creation" [6]. Ezekiel 36:26 speaks of God giving a new heart and a new spirit [2]. This transformation is a divine act, effected by God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit, often through the word of God [6].
The concept of "tearing one's heart" in Joel 2:13 illustrates the call for genuine, inward repentance that goes beyond outward displays of grief. It signifies a change in orientation, priorities, and attitudes, which can only occur through returning to the Lord and relying on His mercy [9]. Believers are said to have "the mind of Christ" through the Spirit, enabling them to grasp divine wisdom that transcends human reasoning [10]. The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in revealing spiritual truths and making manifest the secrets of the heart, leading to self-awareness and conviction [7, 11].
