Storytelling in Preaching and Teaching: Effective Use of Examples
Storytelling, through examples and parables, is a significant method for conveying truth in both biblical teaching and contemporary preaching. The Bible itself uses the term "example" to refer to Christ's life and conduct (1 Pet. 2:21; John 13:15), the behavior of pastors for their flocks (Phil. 3:17; 1 Tim. 4:12), and even historical events as warnings (Heb. 4:11) [2]. Similarly, "parable" (Greek parabole) signifies a comparison or illustration, encompassing short proverbs, prophetic utterances, enigmatic maxims, and expanded metaphors [1]. The preacher in Ecclesiastes is noted for having "made right many similes" [3].
Jesus frequently employed parables in his teaching ministry. Matthew Henry notes that Christ used parables to preach the kingdom of heaven to his countrymen, choosing this method because "the time was not yet come for the more clear and plain discoveries of the mysteries of the kingdom" [11, 13]. This approach allowed him to keep people engaged and expectant [11]. The Gospel of Matthew records seven parables delivered by Jesus in a single discourse, with the first four spoken to a mixed multitude and the remaining three to his disciples privately [14]. These include well-known stories such as the sower, the tares, the mustard seed, and the leaven [9, 16]. John Gill observes that this method of teaching was common among Eastern nations, particularly the Jews [16]. Adam Clarke suggests that understanding parables was crucial for disciples to effectively teach others [17].
Beyond parables, the concept of "example" extends to various aspects of Christian life and ministry. Christ is presented as an example of intercessory prayer (Luke 22:32; John 17:9-24) [4], early rising (Mark 1:35) [5], and sincerity (1 Pet. 2:22) [8]. Ministers are also called to be examples to their congregations (Titus 2:7) [8]. The Apostle Paul, in his instruction to Timothy, emphasizes the importance of teaching and patience in ministry (2 Tim. 4:2, 7) [6, 7, 10]. While Paul himself declared the Gospel "not with excellency of speech" or "arts of rhetoric," he recognized the supreme excellence of the testimony concerning Christ [15]. This suggests that while the message itself is paramount, the method of delivery, including the use of illustrative examples, serves to convey its truth effectively.
The Old Testament also contains notable parables, such as those found in Judges 9:8-15 and 2 Samuel 12:1-4 [9]. These narratives demonstrate a long-standing tradition of using stories to communicate moral and spiritual lessons. The prophetic office of Christ, for instance, is understood to involve "announc[ing] good tidings" and preaching "the great truths of God's government of sinners" [12]. This preaching often took the form of illustrative narratives, making complex truths accessible and memorable.
