Sustaining Ministry through Faith and Obedience in Christianity
Christian ministry is sustained through a combination of faith and obedience, which are often intertwined in biblical teaching. The Apostle Paul, for instance, expressed gratitude to Christ Jesus for empowering him and counting him faithful, thereby putting him into ministry [3, 4]. This highlights that ministry is not merely a human endeavor but a divine calling and enablement.
Faithfulness is a key characteristic expected of saints and is demonstrated in various aspects of Christian life, including the service of God, declaring His word, caring for dedicated things, helping fellow believers, bearing witness, and reproving others [6]. Ministers are specifically exhorted to exercise watchfulness, which includes being watchful with prayer, thanksgiving, steadfastness in faith, heedfulness, and sobriety at all times [1]. This watchfulness is exemplified by Christ Himself and is a requirement God places especially on ministers [1].
Steadfastness, closely related to faithfulness, is commanded in Scripture (Philippians 4:1; 2 Thessalonians 2:15; James 1:6-8) and is secured by God's power and presence, as well as by trust in God and the intercession of Christ [2]. It is a characteristic of saints who cleave to God, remain diligent in the work of the Lord, continue in the apostles' doctrine, and hold fast to their confession [2]. John Chrysostom, in his Homilies on Acts & Romans, frequently references the importance of steadfastness and diligence in Christian living [8, 9].
Obedience to God is another foundational element for sustaining ministry. Christian conduct involves believing God, fearing Him, loving Him, following Him, and obeying Him [5]. This obedience extends to believing in Christ, loving Him, following His example, and obeying His commands [5]. Ministers are called by God, qualified by Him, and commissioned by Christ, having authority from God for edification [7]. Their role is to be ambassadors for Christ, ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God [7].
The goal of ministry, as articulated in Ephesians 4:13, is for the entire Christian community to deepen their understanding and experience of the Christian faith, gaining a profound knowledge of God's Son. This process leads believers to maturity in the Lord, with Christ Himself serving as the standard of this maturity [10]. The Spirit's transformative work aims to make individuals fully like Christ [10]. Therefore, the sustained effort in ministry, rooted in faith and obedience, contributes to the spiritual growth and maturity of the church.
