The Connection Between Desire and Eternal Life in Scripture
The concept of desire is intrinsically linked to the pursuit and experience of eternal life in biblical thought. Scripture indicates that God himself possesses a passionate nature, described as "jealousy" or "zeal," which motivates His actions toward His covenant people, leading to both punishment and restoration [6]. This divine passion provides a framework for understanding human desire in relation to God's promises.
Eternal life, also referred to as "everlasting life," is a frequent theme in the New Testament, though it appears in the Old Testament in Daniel 12:2 [1]. It encompasses the full future of the redeemed and stands in opposition to "eternal punishment" [1, 3]. The same Greek words (aion, aionios, aidios) used to describe God's eternal existence are also used to describe the eternal duration of both the righteous's life and the lost's suffering [3].
The Bible presents eternal life as a gift from God, revealed through Christ [5]. Jesus himself states, "You search the Scriptures, for you think in them you have everlasting life. And they are the ones witnessing concerning Me" (John 5:39 LITV) [2]. This highlights a desire for eternal life that can be misdirected if it does not lead to Christ, who is the source of that life [7]. To "know God and Christ is eternal life" (John 17:3) [5].
The connection between desire and eternal life is further illuminated by the indwelling Spirit. James 4:5 suggests that "the Spirit He caused to dwell in us yearns with envy" [4]. This divine yearning within believers can be understood as aligning human desire with God's will for eternal life. Adam Clarke, in his commentary on John 4:14, connects the "living water" offered by Christ to the gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit, which proceed from Jesus and dwell in a believing heart. one tradition states, "There is no eternal life without the Spirit; no Spirit without Christ; and no Christ to give the Spirit, without dwelling in the heart" [8].

God’s passion identifies him as a personal deity, not an abstract natural force. God is passionate for his word and for the people of his covenant. His passion results in punishment for sin, restoration for repentance, and reward for the pursuit of righteousness.”

There is no eternal life without the Spirit; no Spirit without Christ; and no Christ to give the Spirit, without dwelling in the heart: this his whole doctrine proclaims.”
