The Focus in the Fight Against Sin and Temptation
As we engage in the ongoing struggle against sin, it's essential to maintain a biblically informed focus. Our battle is not merely against the symptoms of sin, but against the root of sin itself, which is our own sinful nature. As Paul so eloquently puts it, "I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh" (Romans 7:18). This acknowledgment is crucial, for it recognizes that our sinful tendencies are deeply ingrained, and that true victory can only be found in the power of the gospel.
In this fight, we must fix our gaze on Christ, the one who has already secured our triumph over sin. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He has broken the power of sin, and now, as our risen Lord, He empowers us to live a life of obedience to God. As we're reminded in Romans 6:14, "For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace." This assurance is not a license to sin, but rather a call to live in the freedom and power of the Spirit, who enables us to put to death the deeds of the body (Romans 8:13).
Our focus, then, should not be on our own strength or willpower, but on the sufficiency of Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We're exhorted in Colossians 3:2 to "set our minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth," recognizing that our true citizenship is in heaven, and that our lives should reflect the values and priorities of our heavenly Father. By keeping our eyes fixed on Christ, we'll be empowered to live a life that is pleasing to God, and to trust in His goodness and faithfulness, even in the midst of our struggles with sin. As we're encouraged in 1 John 5:4, "For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith."
