Importance of Humility in Christian Ministry and Leadership
Humility is a foundational virtue in Christian ministry and leadership, exemplified supremely by Christ himself [1, 2]. Even his entry into Jerusalem was marked by humility (Zechariah 9:9; Matthew 21:5, 7), and he washed his disciples' feet as an act of service (John 13:5) [3].
For those in ministry, humility is essential for serving God (Micah 6:8) [2]. The apostle Paul, for instance, served the Lord "with all humility of mind" in his ministry of the Gospel, acknowledging his own weaknesses and attributing his success to God's grace [13]. This mindset prevents ministers from being arrogant about their gifts or lording over God's heritage [13]. Instead, humility involves entertaining humble thoughts of oneself and positive thoughts of others, rejoicing in their gifts, and being open to instruction from even the least among believers [12].
The New Testament frequently exhorts believers, especially leaders, to cultivate humility. Paul urges Christians to walk "with all lowliness and meekness" (Ephesians 4:2) [11, 12]. Peter instructs younger members to be subject to elders and for all to "clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE" (1 Peter 5:5) [8, 9]. Matthew Henry interprets this as a call for younger, inferior members to show respect and yield to the admonition of their elders [10].
Humility is not merely a personal virtue but a necessary characteristic for those in positions of leadership, alongside other qualities like hospitality, watchfulness, and faithfulness [4, 5, 6]. It is a state of mind pleasing to God (1 Peter 3:4) that brings tranquility to the soul and patience in trials [1].
