The Indwelling and Sealing of the Holy Spirit
The indwelling of the Holy Spirit refers to the Spirit's presence within believers, making them a temple of God [1]. This concept is rooted in biblical passages such as 1 Corinthians 3:16, which states, "Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?" and 1 Corinthians 6:19, "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?" [1]. The indwelling Spirit is promised to saints, as seen in Ezekiel 36:27, and is a source of quickening, guiding, and fruit-bearing in their lives [1]. For instance, the Spirit guides believers (John 16:13; Galatians 5:18) and produces spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22) [1]. The presence of the Spirit is considered proof of belonging to Christ and of adoption into God's family (Romans 8:9, 15; 1 John 4:13; Galatians 4:5) [1]. Those who do not possess the Spirit are described as sensual and without Christ (Jude 1:19; Romans 8:9) [1].
The sealing of the Holy Spirit signifies a divine act of authentication and preservation. Ephesians 1:13 states, "And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit" [3]. This sealing is for the day of redemption, indicating a guarantee of future salvation and protection [2, 7]. The Holy Spirit acts as a seal, marking believers as God's own and securing them until the final day [2]. This concept is also seen in 2 Corinthians 1:22, where God "has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee" [2]. The wicked, in contrast, do not receive this sealing, and judgment is sometimes depicted as being suspended until all saints have received it (Revelation 7:3, 9:4) [2].
The Holy Spirit is often depicted through various emblems in scripture, such as water, fire, wind, and oil [4]. Water symbolizes cleansing, fertilization, refreshment, and abundance [4]. Fire represents purification, illumination, and searching [4]. Wind signifies independence, power, and reviving effects [4]. Oil is associated with healing and consecration [4]. The fruit of the Spirit, as described in Galatians 5:22, includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control [5]. John Calvin, in his commentary on Philippians, notes that believers are like "wild and useless olive trees till we are grafted into Christ, who, by His living root, makes us fruit-bearing branches" through the Spirit [6]. The Spirit's work in believers is a continuous process, and grieving the Spirit through inconsistencies is cautioned against (Ephesians 4:30) [7].

- Galatians (Methodist/Wesleyan) “Adam Clarke on Galatians 5:22: But the fruit of the Spirit - Both flesh - the sinful dispositions of the human heart and spirit - the changed or purified state of the soul, by the grace and Spirit of God, are represented by the apostle as trees, one yielding good the other bad fruit; the productions of each being according to the nature of the tree, as the tree is according to the nature of the seed from which it sprung. The bad seed produced a bad tree, yielding all manner of bad fruit; the good seed produced a good tree, bringing forth fruits of the most excellent kind. The tree of the flesh”
- Philippians (Presbyterian) “Jamieson, Fausset & Brown on Philippians 1:11: The oldest manuscripts read the singular, "fruit." - Ephesians (Presbyterian) “Jamieson, Fausset & Brown on Ephesians 4:30: grieve not--A condescension to human modes of thought most touching. Compare "vexed His Holy Spirit" (Isa 63:10; Psa 78:40); "fretted me" (Eze 16:43 : implying His tender love to us); and of hardened unbelievers, "resist the Holy Ghost" (Act 7:51). This verse refers to believers, who grieve the Spirit by inconsistencies such as in the context are spoken of, corrupt or worthless conversation, &c. whereby ye are sealed--rather, "wherein (or 'in whom') ye were sealed." As in Eph 1:13, believers are said to be sealed "in" Christ, so here "in the Holy ”
