Mystery of Suffering and God's Goodness in Scripture
The coexistence of suffering in the world with the goodness of an omnipotent God presents a profound theological mystery. Scripture consistently affirms God's goodness, wisdom, and loving-kindness, even as it acknowledges the reality of pain and evil [1, 3, 4].
God's goodness is described as a perfection of His character, exercised towards His creatures in various ways, including benevolence, mercy, pity, compassion, and long-suffering patience [4]. His loving-kindness is portrayed as great, excellent, good, marvelous, multitudinous, and everlasting [1, 7]. The wisdom of God is infinite, unsearchable, and beyond human comprehension, encompassing all things and being the source of all human wisdom [3]. Despite these attributes, suffering is a pervasive human experience.
The Bible does not offer a simple theoretical explanation for the mystery of suffering [5]. Instead, it presents various facets of this complex issue. One perspective is that suffering can be a consequence of human sin and rebellion against God [14, 16]. Ephesians 2:2 suggests that human sin results from being governed by evil powers and those who refuse to obey God [13]. Proverbs 1:31 indicates that evil people suffer the consequences of their own actions, and God ensures that sinners receive punishment [16].
However, not all suffering is directly attributable to individual sin. The book of Job, for instance, explores the suffering of a righteous man, challenging the simplistic notion that suffering is always a direct result of personal wrongdoing [11]. The Psalms acknowledge that God knows the "secrets of the heart," implying a deeper understanding of human experience than outward appearances might suggest [2].
Christians are also told to expect suffering, particularly those who strive to live godly lives. The Apostle Peter instructs believers not to be surprised by the trials that inevitably come, noting that Christians can anticipate hostility from a sinful world [12]. one tradition writes that enduring the pain of unjust suffering, when done with a conscience toward God, is commendable [9, 10]. This aligns with Jesus' teaching to bless those who curse [15]. The sufferings of Christ himself, including scorn and mockery, were predicted and endured, serving as a pattern for believers [8].
God's long-suffering is also a significant aspect of His character in the face of human sin and suffering. It is part of His character, intended to lead to repentance, and is exercised both toward His people and the wicked [6]. However, there are limits to this long-suffering, and those who abuse or despise it will be punished [6].
