The Nature of Jesus Christ as Fully God and Man
The mystery of the Incarnation is a profound and wondrous truth that has captivated the hearts and minds of believers for centuries. As we ponder the question of how Jesus can be fully God and fully man, we are drawn into the depths of Scripture, where we find a rich tapestry of revelation that illuminates this glorious truth. In the opening verse of the Gospel of John, we read, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1), establishing the divine nature of our Lord Jesus Christ. And yet, as we journey through the narrative of Scripture, we see this same Jesus, who is fully God, taking on human flesh, being born of a virgin, and living a life of perfect obedience to the Father, as Hebrews 2:14-18 so beautifully attests.
This union of divine and human natures in the person of Jesus is a mystery that is both profound and necessary, for it is in this union that we find the basis for our salvation. As the apostle Paul writes in Philippians 2:5-8, Jesus, who is fully God, emptied himself, taking on the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men, and being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. This willingness to take on human flesh, with all its attendant weaknesses and vulnerabilities, is a testament to the depth of God's love for us, and it is in this love that we find the power of the gospel to transform and redeem us.
As we contemplate the Incarnation, we are reminded that Jesus is not partially God and partially man, but fully both, a truth that is affirmed in the Chalcedonian Creed, which states that Jesus is "fully God and fully man, two natures in one person." This means that Jesus possesses all the attributes of deity, including omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence, while also experiencing the full range of human emotions and limitations, as we see in his tears, his thirst, and his fatigue. And it is in this remarkable union of divine and human natures that we find the basis for our hope and our salvation, for it is in Jesus, who is fully God and fully man, that we see the perfect union of heaven and earth, of God and humanity, a union that is the very heart of the gospel.
