Nature of Unbelief in Scripture and its Consequences

Unbelief, as presented in Scripture, is a fundamental sin and a state of spiritual blindness with severe consequences ^{[1, 2]}. It is not merely a lack of intellectual assent but a deep-seated rejection of God and His truth ^{[1, 9]}.

The Bible describes unbelief as originating from an evil heart, slowness of heart, and hardness of heart ^[1]. It is linked to a disinclination to truth and can be a result of judicial blindness ^[1]. The devil plays a role in fostering unbelief by blinding the minds of individuals and taking away the word from their hearts ^{[1, 2]}. Seeking honor from other people rather than from God also contributes to unbelief ^[1].

Unbelief is closely associated with disobedience. The book of Hebrews, for instance, connects the inability of the Israelites to enter God's rest in Canaan to their unbelief and disobedience ^{[10, 12]}. Adam Clarke notes that unbelief produces disobedience, which in turn leads to hardness of heart and blindness of mind ^[12]. This spiritual blindness is a consequence of sin and can be judicially inflicted by God upon those who willfully reject His truth ^{[2, 13]}.

The consequences of unbelief are significant. It impugns the veracity of God, essentially calling Him a liar ^[1]. The most aggravated form of unbelief is the rejection of Christ ^[9]. John Gill identifies the sin of the Jews in disbelieving, rejecting, and crucifying Christ as a primary example of unbelief ^[11]. Those who deny Christ, whether in doctrine or practice, are characterized as having the spirit of antichrist, and Christ will deny them, leading to destruction ^[8].

Despite human unbelief, God's faithfulness remains steadfast; the unbelief of some does not nullify God's faithfulness ^[3]. However, unbelief is a root cause of defection from God, as faith is what unites individuals to Him ^[14]. It is also connected to self-will and stubbornness, which are forbidden and stem from pride and an evil heart ^[4]. Stubbornness is equated with iniquity and idolatry, and rebellion is likened to the sin of divination ^[5]. The wicked are described as alienated from God, blinded, disobedient, and without understanding, all characteristics linked to unbelief ^{[6, 7]}.
