Role of Providence in Christian Perseverance and Endurance
Divine providence, understood as God's preserving and governing all things through secondary causes, plays a significant role in Christian understandings of perseverance and endurance [3]. This providential care extends to the natural world, animal creation, and human affairs, including the lives of individuals and even their free actions [3, 4]. For believers, God's providence is specifically seen in the special preservation, provision, protection, and deliverance of saints [4].
Perseverance, in a Christian context, refers to the steadfast continuance in faith and good works despite trials and temptations [1, 9]. The testing of faith is understood to produce endurance [5], which in turn leads to experience and hope [7, 9]. The saints are characterized by their patient endurance, keeping God's commandments and faith in Jesus [6]. This endurance is not merely human effort but is maintained through the power of God, the power of Christ, and Christ's intercession [1].
Different theological traditions articulate the relationship between providence and perseverance in distinct ways. The Reformed tradition, for instance, emphasizes the "perseverance of the saints" as their certain continuance in a state of grace, asserting that once justified and regenerated, believers cannot totally or finally fall away from grace [2]. This view is rooted in the immutability of divine decrees, the provisions of the covenant of grace, and the atonement [2]. Charles Hodge, one theologian, argues that the perseverance of the saints rests not on the believer's will or the imperishable nature of grace within them, but "solely on what is out of ourselves," namely, the preserving power of God's love in Christ [14]. Augustine similarly taught that God causes in believers both the capability and the will to persevere, so that their perseverance is a gift of divine grace [16]. Calvin also connected enduring trials with fortitude and patience to God's sealing of adoption to His children [13].
In contrast, other traditions emphasize the human responsibility in maintaining faith while still acknowledging God's enabling grace. The Catholic Church teaches that faith is a free gift that can be lost, and therefore, believers must nourish it with God's word and pray for its increase to persevere until the end [17]. Thomas Aquinas, a scholastic theologian, discussed perseverance in terms of a habit of the mind to stand steadfast against sadness, and also as a purpose of continuing in good until the end [15]. While acknowledging God's grace, this perspective highlights the active role of the believer.
The concept of endurance is also linked to Christ's own example and His "word of patience" [11, 12]. Jesus is presented as the great High Priest who has entered heaven, and His high priesthood is the basis for endurance in the Christian faith [10]. Therefore, Christian perseverance and endurance are understood as a divinely sustained journey, where God's providential care empowers believers to remain steadfast in their faith, even as they actively participate in that journey through their own commitment and reliance on Him [1, 8].
