Understanding God's Attributes Through Biblical Analogies and Examples
The Bible frequently employs analogies and examples to describe God's attributes, helping to convey His nature to human understanding. While Isaiah 40:18 asks, "To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare to him?" [6], the Scriptures themselves offer numerous comparisons to illuminate divine characteristics.
One prominent analogy is God as a father. Psalm 103:13 states, "The Lord is like a father to his children," an analogy that forms a foundational basis for Jesus' teachings on God's fatherhood [7]. This imagery emphasizes God's compassion and care for His people [7]. Similarly, God is depicted as a shepherd, a metaphor that highlights His providential care, guidance, protection, and provision for His flock [13]. This figure is also applied to Christ in the New Testament [13].
God's power is frequently described through natural phenomena and physical actions. His voice, finger, hand, and arm are all used to express His might [5]. The thunder of His power is mentioned in Job 26:14 [5]. This power is characterized as great, strong, glorious, mighty, everlasting, sovereign, effectual, irresistible, and incomparable [5]. The psalmist encourages trust in God by celebrating His mighty power as illustrated in His dominion over the natural world, particularly in its most awe-inspiring and terrible exhibitions [10].
Beyond direct analogies, the Bible uses examples to illustrate God's attributes. His holiness, for instance, is not merely one attribute but is considered the sum of all His attributes, nature, and character [12]. His "glory" is understood as the manifestation of this perfect person, nature, and character [12]. The Old Testament emphasizes God's uniqueness, stating that there is no one else like Him, and highlights His unfailing love (Hebrew khesed) and faithfulness as reasons He restores His people rather than destroying them [8].
Christ himself serves as a primary example of God's attributes, demonstrating devotion to God [4], humility [1], and communion with God [3]. His excellency and glory are described in terms of His divinity, His sonship, His unity with the Father, and His roles as Creator, Mediator, Prophet, Priest, King, and Judge [2]. Humans are also said to bear God's image, endowed with dignity and charged with ruling, though Jesus Christ is presented as the ideal human who fully realized God's purposes [9]. Even human figures like David are described as being "like an angel of God," signifying God-given wisdom and justice [11].
