Understanding God's Commandments in a Complex World
This truth addresses the heart of every believer, who desires to obey God's commandments but may feel overwhelmed by their sheer number. Paul writes in 1 John 5:3 that "this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome." The commandments of God are not intended to be a burden, but rather a guide for living a life that honors Him. The Bible provides a comprehensive overview of God's commandments, and while there are many, they can be summed up in the two great commandments: to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves.
The Westminster Confession of Faith reminds us that God's law is a perfect reflection of His character, and that it is our duty to obey it. However, we must not forget that our obedience is not the basis of our salvation, but rather a response to the salvation we have received through faith in Jesus Christ. This is where the gospel connection comes in - our ability to keep God's commandments is not based on our own strength, but on the power of the Holy Spirit working in us.
In this sense, knowing God's commandments is not just about memorizing a list of rules, but about cultivating a deep relationship with Him and seeking to understand His heart and character. As believers, we are called to study Scripture and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit, that we may understand what God requires of us and live a life that honors Him.
