Understanding God's Patience and Forgiveness in Scripture
God's patience and forgiveness are central aspects of His character, frequently highlighted throughout Scripture. The Bible describes God as "the God of patience and consolation" [8, 10, 12], indicating that these attributes originate from Him and are foundational to His interaction with humanity.
Patience, or "long-suffering," is presented as an inherent part of God's nature [6]. For instance, Exodus 34:6 and Numbers 14:18 portray God as slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. This divine patience is not merely a passive waiting but an active forbearance, intended to lead people to repentance [6]. Romans 2:4 suggests that God's kindness, forbearance, and patience are meant to guide individuals toward a change of heart. The Lord's patience is also demonstrated in His dealings with both His people and the wicked, though limits are eventually set to it, as seen in Genesis 6:3 [6]. Believers are called to wait upon God, trusting in His providence, salvation, and the fulfillment of His promises, which requires patience [1, 2].
