Understanding God's Sovereign Purpose in Adversity
God's sovereign purpose, often referred to as His "decrees," encompasses all things that have ever been or ever will be, determining their causes, conditions, and relations [5]. This divine purpose extends to the natural world, animal creation, and the affairs of humanity, including the free actions of individuals [2]. Even in adversity, Christian theology understands God's wisdom and overarching plan to be at work.
The Bible indicates that God's wisdom is perfect, mighty, universal, infinite, and unsearchable [8]. This wisdom is particularly showcased through the Church, revealing to "principalities and powers in heauenly places" the "manifold wisedome of God" through His plan of redemption [1, 11]. This suggests that even difficult circumstances can serve a role in demonstrating God's intricate and varied wisdom.
The concept of God's providence further illustrates His active governance over all things through secondary causes [2]. This providence is not limited to favorable circumstances but extends to all events, including those that might be considered adverse. For instance, God's "determinate purpose" is said to govern all events, including those related to salvation [7]. While the specific reasons for adversity can be difficult to discern, the belief is that God remains "unaltered in His purpose" [10].
The love of God is also described as sovereign, great, abiding, unfailing, and everlasting [6]. This love is manifested towards perishing sinners and His saints alike [6]. Even when God's wrath is revealed against ungodliness and unrighteousness, as described in Romans 1:18, it is understood within the context of His moral government and righteous displeasure against sin [3, 9]. However, God also commands repentance, indicating a desire for all people to turn to Him [4].
