Understanding Spiritual Assurance and Eternal Salvation
My friend, the question of how we can know truth is a profound one, and it's a inquiry that has puzzled seekers of wisdom for centuries. As Christians, we're reminded in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that all Scripture is breathed out by God, and it's this very Word that equips us for every good work. But how can we be certain of its truth, and how can we discern the voice of God in the midst of life's complexities? The apostle Paul writes in Romans 1:19-20 that what can be known about God is plain to us, because God has shown it to us, and yet, our sinful nature often obscures this knowledge, leading us to exchange the truth about God for a lie (Romans 1:25).
In 1 Corinthians 2:14, we're told that the natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. This highlights the reality that true knowledge of God and his ways is not something that can be grasped through human reason alone, but rather it requires the illumination of the Holy Spirit. As Jesus himself said, "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him" (John 6:44). This drawing, this illumination, is a work of grace, whereby God opens our eyes to see the beauty and truth of his Word.
And so, my friend, to know that you can know truth, you must first acknowledge your own limitations and the effects of sin on your understanding. Then, you must turn to Scripture, which is the very voice of God, and ask the Spirit to enlighten your mind and heart. As you read and meditate on God's Word, pray that he would give you the gift of faith, that you might trust in his promises and his character. In this way, you'll come to know the truth, not just intellectually, but deeply, in the very core of your being, and you'll be able to say with confidence, "I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me" (2 Timothy 1:12).
