Using Biblical Examples to Demonstrate Old Testament New Testament Continuity
The continuity between the Old and New Testaments is evident through various theological concepts and prophetic fulfillments. The term "Testament" itself, when referring to the divisions of the Bible, derives from the Greek diatheke, which is more accurately translated as "covenant" [1, 10]. This highlights a foundational continuity: God's ongoing covenantal relationship with humanity. The Old Covenant, characterized by works, is superseded by the New Covenant of grace, which is described as "ever fresh, flourishing, and excellent" [10].
One significant example of continuity is the concept of sin. The Old Testament establishes the universal reality of sin, with passages like Psalm 58:3 indicating that all human beings are born sinners [11]. Proverbs 30:8 refers to "vanity" as sinful acts [12], and Psalm 19:13 speaks of deliberate sins as rebellion [14]. This understanding of pervasive sinfulness is foundational to the New Testament's message of salvation. Paul, in Romans 1:18–3:20, emphasizes the universal sinfulness of both Gentiles and Jews, asserting that no one can find favor with God through their own actions [15]. The New Testament further clarifies that "he that committeth sin is of the devil," contrasting with those who do righteousness [13]. Even after conversion, individuals may still commit sins, and denying this makes God a liar [16].
Prophecy and its fulfillment also demonstrate continuity. The "gospel of Jesus Christ" is presented in the New Testament as the fulfillment of promises and expectations from the Old Testament [17]. For instance, the promise of a Messiah is foreshadowed in Genesis 3:15, which is cross-referenced with numerous New Testament passages pointing to Christ's birth, life, and triumph over evil [2]. The resurrection, a core doctrine of the New Testament, is also present in the Old Testament, with references in Job 19:26, Psalm 16:10, Isaiah 26:19, and Daniel 12:2 [7].
Furthermore, the New Testament frequently quotes or alludes to the Old Testament. These quotations are not always uniform in method, sometimes referring to sections of the Old Testament by the person associated with them, such as "Moses at the bush" for Exodus 3:6 [9]. The very existence of "Scripture" in the New Testament invariably denotes the Old Testament, regarded as divinely inspired [8]. The New Covenant, mentioned in Jeremiah, is explicitly cited in Hebrews 8:13 as making the first covenant old, leading to its eventual abolition with the introduction of the Gospel [18]. This transition is mediated by Christ's death, which ratifies the new covenant and secures an eternal inheritance [19].
Even the role of angels, who serve as ministering spirits, is consistent across both testaments, appearing in Genesis 19:15 and Hebrews 1:14, among other passages [4]. The concept of God as the giver of life, who holds the breath of all living creatures, is also a continuous theme, seen in Daniel 5:23 and Acts 17:25 [5]. The prophetic vision of a kingdom that will never be destroyed, found in Daniel 2:45, finds its ultimate fulfillment in the New Testament's depiction of Christ's eternal reign [6]. The inclusion of Gentiles into God's people, prophesied in Zechariah 8:23, is explicitly fulfilled in the New Testament through the spread of the gospel to all nations [3].
